The international/global movement of people and ideas has created conditions of multiculturalism and diversity in countries that had earlier been monocultural; it has also generated concerns centring on race, ethnicity, and the politics of diversity. The rights and privileges of those artists and culture producers and performers who do not subscribe to an ideology of Eurocentric superiority increasingly assume social, political, and cultural importance. Kobena Mercer has recently argued that 'multiculturalism in its broadest sense, as the dilemma of living with difference, is really the decisive issue that cultural studies has to address' (Mercer, 1992: 447).
It became clear during the reception that the ROM and the community had two diametrically opposed agendas for the evening. The ROM was really looking for endorsement and support for the exhibition and for help in promoting it in the Black community.
