Observing the actions of the senses can be particularly important to other-centred work since they are the interface with others. The senses are themselves conditioned. Each has its own tendencies to act in ways that support self-creation. The senses are attracted to things, or, put technically, ‘objects’, that confirm or point to the self. Called the uncontrol-lables, the senses are caught by objects which fascinate and draw the attention because they support the habitual preoccupations of the self-story.

We bring our assumptions and prejudices into our day to day interactions and, without even knowing it, we seek out the familiar and the confirmatory even in new surroundings. We fear impermanence and loss, particularly because we fear sickness, our own deaths and the deaths of those we love, and we therefore try to create an illusion of permanence by automatically adjusting our experience to fit our pre-existing blueprint. The core Buddhist teachings describe a psychology in which the mind is conditioned.

That is, we perceive them in ways that are driven by the power that they have to support our sense of self. 13 In our exploration of the client’s world view we can unpick the origins of the rupa quality, seeing how we came to view things in a particular way as a result of past experience, and we can look at how the rupa process is maintained and continues to support particular ways of seeing things. The other direction of therapeutic exploration is to bring into question the rupa aspect of perception and to explore the reality of the objects and people we encounter.
