The processor uses RAM to store these results until they can be compiled into the final result(s). RAM is also used to store instructions about currently running applications. For example, when you start a computer game, a large set of the game’s instructions (for example, how it works, how the screen should look, which sounds must be generated) is loaded into memory. The processor can retrieve these instructions much faster from RAM than it can from the hard drive, where the game normally resides until you start it.

Dedicated registers are usually used for specific functions such as maintaining status or system controlled counting operations. General purpose registers are used for multiple purposes, typically when mathematical and comparison operations occur. These numbers are the contents of the registers and other key memory locations.

In general these two operating systems do not support interchangeable applications, though most PDA software manufacturers now support both platforms. One of the most common uses for a PDA is as an organizer—that is, to keep track of appointments, record addresses, and phone numbers, and small notes. Many PDAs also allow you to plug into a fax machine to send faxes or to plug into a network to send e-mail or access the Internet.
